California is in an unprecedented mess with real unemployment -- according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (see above "CA Economy/Jobs" tab) -- in parts of LA County approaching 20%.

Throughout AD53, small businesses have lost as much as 30% to 60% of their revenues!

Crime is soaring throughout the district. Statewide unemployment is estimated to be between 15% and 18%.

Attorney & AD53 Activist, Peter Thottam lobbying West Hollywood Mayor John Duran and Councilwoman citizens' liberties & constitutional rights. In August 2007, Peter -- founder of the LA National Impeachment Center -- together with over 130 volunteer activists presented 16,432 handwritten signatures with verified local voter addresses, successfully lobbying West Hollywood to become the 4th largest US city to pass impeachment resolutions against both President Bush and VP Cheney. Peter also personally met with and lobbied all 12 local LA City Council members as well as Congressional Representatives Henry Waxman, Jane Harman, Elton Gallegly, Howard Berman, Adam Schiff & Linda Sanchez.

Peter also obtained the full endorsement of local Congressional representatives Maxine Waters & Diane Watson. In 2007 and 2008 he organized citizen rights' lobbying efforts on-site in Torrance, Venice, Santa Monica, and the L.A. City Council.

Friends and family:

I'm delighted to announce the birth of our son, Luke M. Thottam, on Feb. 15, 2009 at 1:19 pm at Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica, California. Luke was 3 days early. At the moment of birth he weighed 7.6 pounds and was 20.25 inches in length. Mom and baby are both fine [Dad is doing fine too -- ; ) ]. Everything went very well. He is absolutely gorgeous. Several Blackberry photos taken one hour after birth are attached herewith.

From my PC yesterday, at the hospital, we were able to videoconference between Luke and Kirstin's parents (his grandparents) in Abu Dhabai, real time and at no cost. It was a real 'world is flat' moment. He also heard (via phone) from his aunt (Kirstin's sister) in Mexico. As the global economic crisis unfolds (see the 'News' and 'Economic Forecast' tabs) Luke's new world is clearly getting both bigger and smaller as its inhabitants' collective & individual consciousness evolves.

A special thank you to all who have already sent their congratulations! We ask that any money that would be used for baby gifts be used instead for support of local non-profits and public education programs.

The above half-meter resolution image of the U.S. Capitol, Washington D.C. was collected by the GeoEye-1 satellite on Jan. 20, 2009 to commemorate the Inauguration of President Barack Obama. The image, taken through high, wispy white clouds, gives you an idea of the large numbers of concentrated masses of people at the Mall that attended the Inaugural Celebration. -- Peter Thottam (Jan 2009)
