*SPECIAL NOTE REGARDING THE MILITARY-INDUSTRIAL-POLITICAL-FINANCIAL COMPLEX, AD53 AND CALIFORNIA:

*Wall Street's profiteers, its proxy banks & major media instruments and Pentagon defense contractors are bankrupting and destroying the soul of our state and country.  The Nobel Prize winning economist, Joseph Stieglitz, has noted that we have effectively now spent over $3 trillion on the Iraq war.  Who will pay for this?  We are now insolvent.  California is $24 BILLION in the hole and unprecedented cuts are happening all across the state in public education summer programs, staff headcount and in major public healthcare programs (Medicare, CalWorks, etc).

**CALL TO ACTION AND FOR REAL REFORM & CHANGE**

SPREAD THE WORD.   OUR ASSEMBLY DISTRICT MUST NOT BE FURTHER MILITARIZED.

DISTRICT RESIDENTS AND VOTERS DESERVE BETTER  REAL JOBS AND HIGHER PAY.

On June 8, 2010 - SUPPORT PETER THOTTAM FOR CA STATE ASSEMBLY
:

We must open our eyes and recognize what is happening to the soul of California and, more broadly, of the United States.  Since 2001 there has been more than a doubling of funds dedicated to military spending in the 53rd Assembly District.  The Thottam For Assembly Campaign is passionately anti-war and committed to seeing the creation of new technology, engineering and service sector jobs in the 53rd Assembly District.  The phrase military-industrial complex was first used on January 17, 1961, by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in his farewell address to the nation in what is now often called his most famous speech, his Military Industrial Complex Speech:

"In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.  We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together."

Eisenhower's children have stated that in an earlier draft of the speech, Eisenhower originally refered to the "military-industrial-congressional-media complex".  I would substitute 'political' in lieu of congressional.  California's State Assembly and its Congress need fresh voices who will be honest with voters and candid about the economic realities facing Californians.  I am running for Assembly to be one of these voices.  My campaign team and I are running not just to see how or why California has gotten into the mess it is in but, more importantly, to determine how to get out of it and how to give ourselves, our children and our communities the best future possible.
