We must open our eyes and recognize what is happening to the soul of California and, more broadly, of the United States. Since 2001 there has been more than a doubling of funds dedicated to military spending in the 53rd Assembly District. The Thottam For Assembly Campaign is passionately anti-war and committed to seeing the creation of new technology, engineering and service sector jobs in the 53rd Assembly District. The phrase military-industrial complex was first used on January 17, 1961, by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in his farewell address to the nation in what is now often called his most famous speech, his Military Industrial Complex Speech:
- "In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist. We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes.
